Cardiac Calcium Scoring CT

The goal of this screening exam is to determine if Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is present and to what extent, even, without symptoms.

This exam should be performed on patients with risk factors of CAD such as:

-high blood cholesterol level

-family history of heart attack

-high blood pressure

-cigarette smoking

-overweight or obese

-physical inactivity

This study is performed without a contrast injection and cannot determine the presence of soft non-calcified plaque. However, recent studies have shown that the coronary artery calcium score is the best predictor of coronary artery disease among patients at intermediate risk (compared to family history, C-reactive protein, ankle brachial index, and carotid intima-media thickness). The more accurate risk assessment provided by a coronary artery calcium score can help your doctor decide on a better treatment plan.
